The Sound of Data is a project that was part of Esch22, European Capital of Culture 2022. The goal of the project is to investigate and use different ways in which scientific data from various disciplines can be used to compose and perform music. The technology central to the project is data sonification.
In this project I acted as artistic partner and as invited artist. My work as an artist consisted of composing, producing and performing music for a commissioned audiovisual piece. The visuals were produced by multimedia artist Jaromir Mulders. The piece was based on sonifications of synthetic 3D body scan data. This data was provided by the Computer Vision, Imaging and Machine Intelligence (CVI2) Research Group of the University of Luxembourg.
Activities as artistic partner consisted of communicating with the various scientific stakeholders regarding data interpretation, data management as well as coaching and training 11 selected artists in the field of data sonification and data-driven music composition. Data that was used consisted of 4 categories: historical data, traffic data, 3D body scan data and crowd source art data.
This project was realized in collaboration with FNR (Luxembourg National Research Fund, https://www.fnr.lu/), LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, https://www.list.lu/), Rockhal (https://rockhal.lu/) and the University of Luxembourg (https://www.uni.lu/en/).
